Cutting excelworkbook in pieces

we are working with YAFPC versie 5.03.
In the archived topics i saw almost the same problem in excel that we also discover.
The problem is that when printing an Excel file with several workbooks, the PDF printer is cutting the workbook in several pieces.
What can we do to make it 1 pdf?

samba asks for username and password

I have installed the vmware version and all works fine.. but after a few days it starts asking clients for a username and password (when browseing the network). I have seen this before on our archive server (fedora core 9) but got around it by makeing it join the domain... is this possible. or what over things should i check?

Quality of PDF's created from PowerPoint files.

Bob Friend: I'm having issues creating PDF's from PowerPoint files. The only way to get a good quality PDF is to chose "High Quality" when printing the PPT. Unfortunatley this creates extremely large files sizes and makes it very impractical. What is the best method for printing PDFs from PPT files?

Simon Howley: Hi, when assigning a domain account into the External Storage Setting and clicking test I get the following result:

Error mounting //servername.domain.local/prints:
password too long.

I know this works as Im just trying to change accounts - the previous accounts credentials worked fine.

Is this a known limitation or have I hit a bug ?

shoodabean: Hi Wolfgang, since running with YAFPC 5.03 (With the new features -thanks!) We have converted our business process from buying pre printed letterhead to letting YAFPC do the letterhead printing entirely.

The process works as such:

YAFPC is set up with one PDF printer per deparment. Plus a couple more for 'odd jobs'.

User prints to PDF printer using macros in word. PDF printer then saves document to network share.

My code watches network share for creation of documents and then prints that to a physical printer (which one depends on which pdf printer was used), backs up document in network share to another location and deletes from network share.

Not only has this massively reduced our costs on buying pre printed letterhead but also gives us control of whats on our letterhead and when. Usually this was a process of talking to suppliers, signing off proofs etc. We also have the added advantage of being able to change our letterheads on the fly, adding advertisements or extended opening times for our business.

We have been running 5.03 for a good while now. I'm very happy to say that we have had no problems, no reboots etc. It is exceptionaly reliable and very easy to install, configure and use.

We have on average about 1500 documents put through it everyday and have not had a single problem with it.

For our organisation it truly is bullet proof.

Many Thanks for such a device, I am looking forward to future versions (although I can think what could be done better!).

Custom Filenames on a per printer Basis

I was wondering whether it is possible to set a custom filename for each different printer we have setup?

So we have an invoice printer, which prints invoice(1).PDF

And also a Purchase Order Printer, which prints purchaseorder1.pdf?

Also is it possible to create the alias based on a portion of the username getting sent to the appliance?

When a job gets submitted it gets send as user "sean (192.168.2.2)" because of the way we have our software setup, and it is very hard to change the way that it is doing this.

Traffic simulation results

Wolfgang Ullrich: After fixing a bug that caused a system crash when accessed by a large number of users, I have tested the system with a "traffic simulator" script. The test machine (appliance) was installed as virtual machine on VMware ESX Server 3.0.2. The VM has 512MB RAM, a 1GB HDD and is running from CD image version 5.03 with VMware-tools plugin installed and 6 testprinters configured.

The "traffic simulator" script was running on a Linux machine in the network. The script was running an endless loop doing the following steps:
- chose a random user account (1 of 500 possible)
- chose a random printer (1 of 6 possible)
- send a print job of 5 pages test document
- wait for a random time (1 to 20 seconds)

6 instances of this script were running in parallel for about 48 hours having printed 49810 documents. 2980 documents (6%) were discarded for exceeding the "maximum number of jobs" in a printer queue. 46830 documents were created properly and stored to the home directories of the 500 users. Documents in user homes have been removed when older than 30 minutes. Sending email to users was disabled.

After stopping the sripts there were 1398 print jobs remaining in the queues of the 6 printers. It took nearly 2 hours until the remaining jobs were printed and all queues were empty.

Looks like the system is bulletproof now!
It would be interesting to know, who has the system running with the biggest load in a production environment. Please report here.

update v2 to v5 appliance no external storage

if have upgraded my v2 appliance (under vmware server 1.04) to the new 5.01 appliance. Restored the settings from the v2 backup.
When I print to my pdf printers nothing happens. The log says that it has been created. The pdf pinter did not send an e-mail and the user folder on the external storage was empty. This all worked in v2 in my windows environment.
I have tested the credentials with the test button, it is ok.
I get only pdf's if the printer puts the pdf in the appliance user directory.

Any solution?

Blank PDF (or only letterhead background) problem & solution

Steve Root: I've just discovered a bug in version 5 related to the higher default printer DPI (we were using version 4 without issue).

Graphic DPI is now defaulting to 4000dpi and from one particular program we use to produce documents it simply prints a blank page at that resolution. Other applications print OK still. Dropping DPI down to 2400dpi for each user for each printer driver has solved it for that program (although I told users to now use 1200dpi to limit file sizes).

It would be nice to be able to set printer defaults like this (and also page sizes*) from within YAFPC rather than on each users printer settings.

*for others, page size default size can currently be achieved by creating a blank PDF of the desired page size and setting it as the letterhead background.

Several network storages

Ole Christian Backer: In YAFPC Server, there are only one "Network storage", a server\share where we save PDFs.

Could it be possible to make more than one network storage available, with different creditentials per storage, just like we can make more than one printer? Then, we can use printers(and storages) like Printer_secretary that saves into \\server\secretary_share, and printer_admin that saves into storage server\admin_share...

We already have more than one printer, how about making more than one storage?

A printer can now be configured to send its documents (additional) to a fixed email address. Upgrade from version 5.00 can be made via "Upgrade Package 501". Earlier versions need a change to the new ISO image "YAFPC-501.iso".

: I need one LPR printer, when it recieves a job, to always e-mail the PDF to the one mailbox, regardless of who generated it.

The LDAP works fine, but now I want to test an extension of this where an AS400 print job will send all of its printer output to a specific user - everytime. (in fact it will be a number of "pdf-printers" each one sending to a defferent, specific mailbox (ie.. accounts printouts to the accounst dept mailbox; service to the service mailbox etc)

This would obviously be additional functionality to the LDAP functionality.

Possible?

Consecutive Numbers

The Consecutive number option is set for the file names but this doesn't appear to be working. I can see several documents being created in the log but all with the same name and only one appears in the external storage.

The File contains of 59 Pages.
I click on print, wait e few sekonds and during the upload prozess to the PDF Printer, i´ll get the first mail with an converted pdf file, but it contains only Pages 1 to 31. Then, the next mail get in and contains a pdf file with Page 32. After this, the Next PDF File get in with converted Pages 33 to 59.

What could this be?

I updated to 4.00 and used the manual to install the printer driver on a server to allow for large paper sizes to be plotted from AutoCAD.

The plot previewed in the software OK, but the PDF produced was only a small 8.5 x 11 corner of the plot.

Any idea what may be going wrong?

Wolfgang Ullrich: For those who have frequently requested a function for querying a LDAP server or Active Directory to get a user's email address there is an early access version 4.15 available for download. The download is not displayed on the homepage yet. But with the following two download links everyone can get this version. Download the files:

External Storage

i Type: \\IP-ADRESS\ and then push the ENTER Button, but instead of the PDF Server, it appears a errormessage like:

Can´t access pdf Server, you may lack access to use this networksource. Pleas contact your administrator.

The network is not present or hasn´t been started.

So, what do I have to do?

I purcheced VM Appliance version YAFPC2.00.
Word, Excel, conversion are fine but not for ppt files.

How to duplicate.
1. Create new powerpoint presentation
2. In the title type "123456789012345678901234" with one line.
3. Save the file and print as PDF using YAFPC.
4. PDF will create two line like follows.
"12345678901234567890"
"1234"

I want YAFPC to show exactly what user see.
I've tried many settings on YAFPC also PPT side, but can't resolve the issue.

Wolfgang Ullrich: After consulting a couple of experts I'm confident the Appliance has to be seen as "mere aggregation" of a shareware component with GPL'ed software corresponding to §2 of the GPL. To make this more clear I have made some changes to the current appliance: My own GPL'ed component YAFPC is not compiled into the appliance package any more; The preinstallation of the appliance was replaced by an installation script, thus the user must conform the installation first; And all GPL'ed software have been made public (incl. sources) on a new project homepage as "General-Purpose Appliance System" to be useable for other software appliances too.
Hope that nobody bothers me again with accusations about violating other licenses.

Wolfgang Ullrich: I've been accused by someone for violating the GNU General Public License (GPL) by distributing my shareware program YAFPC-Appliance preinstalled on a Linux life system which is distributed under the GPL. To avoid trouble in case this person is right, I have switched the project homepage of YAFPC-Appliance completely offline. I'll try to get instructions about what to do in the next few days from people who should know more than me about this. Depending on the result the homepage will get online again, probably with some required changes, or stay offline permanently. If someone in the audience of this forum has good knowledge about this object please feel free to post.

Wolfgang Ullrich: If installed on a YAFPC-Appliance PDF Server it enables read only access to SNMP managed objects on this machine.
SNMP versions V1, V2c and V3 are supported. This plugin can be used to monitor important system parameters of the PDF server with NAGIOS, N-View or other SNMP based network monitor systems.

You can configure access to this agent in "Plugin Management" | "Configure Plugin". Assumed you have checked "Enable SNMP V1&V2c", setup the community to "public" you can test the access from any Linux host with snmp installed using this command:

snmpwalk -v 2c -c public

Wolfgang Ullrich: This is a general code cleanup version. The main change is the underlying Linux system was changed to SLAX Linux (http://www.slax.org). This system has the advantage of being able to install plugin modules. A first set of plugins for VMware Tools is available by now. Other plugins may follow. So I've planned to make the following plugins in the near future:
- SNMP Plugin that enables SNMP read access to all Linux system MIB's to be used for monitoring the appliance by some network monitors like Nagios.
- Database connector plugin for storing created documents to external MySQL databases.
- MySQL server plugin to be used as a storage for created documents.
- Database client plugin for browser based access to stored documents.
- Full Text Search plugin to provide a full text search feature for stored documents in databases.

Feature to modify Image compression?

is there a feature or option to modify the compression of images in converted pdf´s like in Adobe Acrobat?
There you can say images should be in xyz% of quality in created pdf´s, or don´t leave quality, because the images are still fragmented.

The one thing that I really miss in your product is the possiblility of adding a reciept email address as a parameter to each printjob.

I.e.: every month, we send out 800+ pages of accountstatements from Navision. We've already have a field on each clientaccount containing that client's email-address and another field (boolean) to show whether the client want to receive his accountstament via email.

The accountstatement is just the start. If I can move - let's say 50% - of all our invoiceprints to PDF as well, I could really save some forrest. We currently print around 1.000 invoices a day!

Multiple print jobs into one PDF file

Dieter Hummel: As a matter of fact, when we want to print out legal folders from within our DMS - containing scanned material and digital copies of internal papers - it happes that for each and every entry in the database a single printjob is created. Thus a print of 300 pages takes a long time locking up a printer. My idea was to send all print jobs to a stand alone PDF print server which is able to create ONE PDF file which can quickly and easily be printed out or emailed...
Can I APPEND several consecutive print jobs from ONE user into ONE PDF file with YAFPC? If not, is it planned for the future?

Drazen Zuvela: I am just about testing YAFPC (0.99) on my test machine recently renewed. Its Gigabyte MB with integrated RTL8111b. Same card was not recognized by recent SLES installation but was recognized by SUSE10.2
At the moment dowloading latest YAFPC version 1.06, in order to see will this card be recognized.
What to do if knoppix base is stil the same? Is there any option to start CD installation and add right drivers for this card?

I would like for this to work similar to "print to fax" printing on your PC.

For that, when you print to a fax, it brings up a form to let you put in the telephone number of the recipient. You can also search your address book to find the recipient and you can choose multiple recipients, much like an email CC, BCC, etc.

Once you choose your recipients, you next choose whether you want to include a cover sheet. Pick the style of the sheet and then type in your cover letter details.

Once finished, it sends the fax to all the recipients with the cover sheet.

This appliance would be wonderful if you could do it the same way.

Any time I have a sales person who wants to send a quote or our accouting wants to send an invoice... We currently print the quote or invoice, scan it to a PDF, and email it to the customer with a note saying what it is.

If we could print directly out of our accouting package to this appliance, put in the users email address, and type a cover note for it.. It would be very useful as a business appliance.

If you own quickbooks, which is the most popular small business accouting package. They offer the ability to send an email quote, invoice, etc.. However, it goes through their email service (not your own) and many people have complained about delayed emails, etc. Not to mention you can't put in a cover sheet, or a letterhead or anything like that.

This would be a way to do the same thing, but have more features and could be marketed to small businesses for that use.

After conversion the link mailto and link HTTP are OK but T:\DI\MWCLIENT.INI does not function (T:\DI\MWCLIENT.INI refers to \\Servnas0\Vhh\DI\MWCLIENT.INI in the file word).

An other test : a link to c:\users\xxxx.ini does not function... The first problem is not a lan problem...

The document doc in which i establish the links is in ARIAL.

If I change the font for TIMES, any link is ok ; mailto: does not function... HTTP: do not function any more...

numeric usernames cannot create PDF printer

I am using the PDF Server in VMware ESX 2.5.3 and it works really well. Nevertheless I have some windows users with numeric usernames like 12345678 and they cannot map the PDF printer because the system ask them for a login and password. It is like if there were some restriction to avoid numeric usernames. "Normal" usernames like "mike" or "mike123" work fine. What could I do to solve this problem? I am using version 1.0.6

Joining multiple PDF's into a single PDF

I think I remember reading this in the manual a few version ago but can't find reference to it now. Perhaps my memory is failing as I age.

I'd like to join several PDF's together
(example:
Quote.doc => quote.pdf
Prices.xls => prices.pdf
Then join quote.pdf & prices.pdf => quoteprices.pdf
)
I seem to remember that a printer could be configured with one name as a 'compiler' or 'spool' would perhaps be a better term. Another printer could be configured as a 'triger', that would print the document sent to it as well as anything else waiting in the spool.
EG re-print quote.pdf USING //netpdf/complier then
re-print prices.pdf USING //netpdf/trigger
to output a PDF containing the pages from both print outs.

Is this possbile or is my memory playing games?

Juan Pedro: When I print any excel documents, I receive a file with 254 Bytes, if I open it i receive error. The excel document have 2 or more pages.

Wolfgang Ullrich: For all users who want early acces to a beta release of the next stable version a download link to the update package "YAFPC-Applinace-104u.war" was added in the download section.

Main changes are:
- Document output takes care of the page size and orientation of the original document page by page, if a printer without letterheads is used.

- The "owner password" (for PDF manipulation) can be setup for each printer. If no password is set and encryption is enabled a random password is used like before.

- The "user password" (for PDF reading) can be set. If "random user password" is enabled, a random password is applied and sent by email to the user.

- Permission settings for encrypted documents include all possible permissions now.

- A maximum size of documents to be sent as email attachment can be setup now. Documents exceeding this size are not attached to emails.

- The printer queue doesn't display entries of finished documents any more.

THIS IS A BETA ONLY!! Don't use it in production environments without having tested before on another test system.

System outdated for Test License

Wolfgang Ullrich: Some users get the error message "System outdated for Test License" while activating a test license. This means the CD image used with the license is outdated. Please use the current release of the CD image from http://www.pdfserver.net for testing.

To avoid users testing outdated CD images a test license can only applied to CD images with a release date not older than 90 days.

- Could you add an additional PDF printer option? I like that I have the capability to Encrypt documents and don't allow modification. However, could you add an option that allows people to still make selections on the document (Copy/paste).

- Could you add to your scripts a meathod to clear the network routing table after network changes are made? I seem to have some weird issues.

Users not able to connect to VMware PDF server

Gareth Ellson: When the users try and connect to the PDF VMware server they get a request window for user-name and password.
The AD domain name has been entered in the Workgroup / Windows Domain field as indicated in the manual.
I have tried several possibilities but all do not seem to work.
Does anyone have a clue?

Feature Wish - Overwrite existing document

Thank you for your efforts in adding the document naming feature.

Would it be possible to have a further option on a per printer basis where it can be set to allow overwriting of existing documents? If this was enabled then the '(username-##)' would not have to be appended to the document name.

Ideally for what I want to use it for it would remove the 'Microsoft Word - ' and the '.doc' as well but it would get very messy for you to add options like this that are specific to particular applications/operating systems(regular expressions for the filename maybe?).

Subnet Mask issues

: I have an issue with subnetting the appliance to a static ip.

We are using Class B internal addresses subnetted with the mask 255.255.254.0

The problem is that the appliance will default to the default subnet mask of a class B address 255.255.0.0 even if I set it as 255.255.254.0 in the admin interface.

Is there a fix for this? or a bug?

When the user prints a PDF it would be well to provide to send the PDF in T:\name of user\PDF Printer to him and to send this link by email to him; not in UNC, unknown concept for the lambda user, but with the letter T: of the disc...

I think that more variables are necessary : name of user, sequence number of file PDF for this user, name of the repertory of storage (PDF Printer for example) to compose the mail...

That would solve the problem of the ASCII characters...
